Biden issued a similar proclamation a year later, welcoming Jeopardy! contestant and transgender woman Amy Schneider to the White House and announcing a set of measures intended to support transgender rights.

Biden was the first American president to issue a formal presidential proclamation recognizing the event. The word “Transgender” (or “Trans”) is an umbrella term that refers to people whose gender identity is different from their sex assigned at birth. TDOV was founded in 2009 by Rachel Crandall, a Transgender activist in the United States, as a day to raise awareness of the unique experiences of Transgender people. They have fought, and continue to fight, for gender equity in our society. Every year on March 31, we celebrate the International Transgender Day of Visibility (TDOV) and recognize the struggles, sacrifices and achievements of Transgender people.
